Well,

MODOK has packed his bags and is saying goodbye to MMM2011!
I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone involved in making this a great Month...
I applaud the awesome artists that shared they're time and talent with us.
I commend the participants who've returned from past years to share with us yet again.
Finally I warmly welcome all of our first time submissions. We should definitely be around for March MODOK Madness in 2012! So mark your calenders and get keep MODOK in the back of your mind, which is where he likes to hang out.

In closing I have to thank two folks in particular....
Big Thanks to Kasra Ghanbari for his support over the years, and for sharing his great collection of MODOK images. He always has something great for us to post.
Finally, I thank the co-creator of the blog Mr. Brendan Tobin, who shared some beers with me a few years back and agreed that the Blog would be a good Idea... Brendan keeps the blog moving forward (introduced the twitter and facebook stuff this year) and its a pleasure working with him on this project every year.

So, with FOUR years of March MODOK Madness in the can. I wish you all the best throughout the rest of 2011, and hope to see you again for MMM 2012!!

Rich from over at PopCap Games sent us this hairy wild eyed version of MODOK which he named "DAVEDOK". He Writes,

I based mine off of Plants Vs Zombies. Since I did all the art on that game I felt it would be funny to do this. My coloring was super fast but I had to get it done.

It looks great Rich, even if you do feel it was super fast work. We appreciate you taking the time to share an image with us in the last hours of MMM2011.

Randy Tischler, who helps put on the Baltimore Comic-Con, sent us these drawings that he's collected from artists present at the Baltimore Comic Con. Randy is partial to the work of Richard Thompson (of the syndicated comic strip Cul-de-Sac) Randy writes, "He did this sketch for me at the Baltimore Comic-Con last year where he used characters from Cul-de-Sac (so it's definitely funnier if you know the strip, but it's funny even if your new to Thompsons work!)."

Pharaoh-DOK!

March is winding down.. But, MODOK is going out with A ROAR!..
Because MODOK is into ordering around all the AIM Beekeepers. He figured he'd take it one step further and have the staff at AIM HQ build him a monument... Maybe like a sphinx or some other monolithic structure that would display his greatness for ages to come... So MODOK gathered his henchmen, told them that they where going on a weekend team building retreat. Then geared up in his royal headgear and oversaw the construction. THUS he BECAME PHARAOH-DOK!. In an interesting side note...his visor says "Kill" in heiroglyphs and I based a lot of the mask design on Tutenkhamen. Furthermore he also, had some Canopic jars specially made to house the remains of any hero's that dared oppose him.

Sure, John Byrne did a good job with the cover to Captain America #313, but it needed a visceral touch. That's when you call in Matthew Allison. Death Adder plucking an eye and vivisecting MODOK's midsection were much needed, but the icing on the cake has to be Cap puking green stuff. Nice touch. Thanks to both illustrator Matthew Allison and collector Kasra Ghanbari. This one is not for the faint of heart.

A lot of folks know Sal Abbinanti as the art rep for people like Alex Ross and Bill Sienkiewicz through Comic Book Pros. But they also know him as the artist on the creator-owned book Atomika, which like Sal's art is a truly singular creation and must-see.
Kasra has been wanting Sal to draw MODOK for years now, and finally got his wish when one of his best friends, (the incredible artist/force of nature known as Buzz) persuaded Sal to take up the challenge and draw our favorite mental organism. Sal, didn't just draw one MODOK though.... he ended up doing THREE!!, and they're all wicked!

I agree Ian, MODOK is the best stress breaker for when you have bills, or pressing assignments. Furthermore, I think you might just be onto something when you wrote down MODOK CONVOY!... Because, Honestly. No two words in the English language have ever sounded better together in my opinion...

Craig continues his MODOK campaign with a Pineapple MODOK. Inspired by Joel Watson's web comic HijiNKS ENSUE:

The last one requires some explaining; when the cartoonist behind HijiNKS ENSUE started designing a "hate-filled pineapple" , I realized the similar shape of pineapples and MODOKS but I made the artistic (lazy) decision not to give my pineapple MODOK an angry face. I may reconsider. Stay tooned.

Ah, hate-filled pineapples and MODOK makes one surly combination. Thanks for all your efforts this year, Craig, we have enjoyed your MODOK madness thus far!

Sketching MODOK With A Six Year Old

I drew this while hanging out with Christopher, a six year old. It's MODOK. And Chewbacca. Christopher was indifferent to MODOK, but asked what Chewbacca was doing with his mouth all agape. I said, "Laughing." He informed me, "He doesn't do that." Art directors are mean at any age, I guess.

We have a two-fer for you today from talented, returning artists Carter and Spencer! The brothers were excited about helping out with their great March MODOK Madness submissions last year that they were inspired to send in brand new drawings for 2011.

The first stunning piece seen here is by elder brother and artiste extraordinaire Carter, 9 years old and in the third grade, meshing the giant headed mental organism with the popular Gundam series to create the fierce looking Mobile Suit GunDOK! As if MODOK wasn't trouble enough, he now pilots a deadly mecha suit! Awesome work, Carter!

Our second incredible piece features a stuffed bear MODOK mash-up by the younger sibling and devoted illustrator Spencer, a 7 year old first grader, who is a big fan of the Japanese hit Rilakkuma. Internet, meet Reela-DOK! I've never seen either MODOK or Rilakkuma look better than how you've depicted both here, Spencer!

We here at March MODOK MAdness were blown away by this year's MODOKs you guys have created, Carter and Spencer! We appreciate you sending in the amazing drawings and we hope to see you again real soon!

Above is Joel Duggan's sketch of Mad Dog MODOK. You can find this inked piece of MODOK, his weekly web comic and more of his stellar work over at starcrossedonline.

Joel's work came to us through an email sent by Paton Francis(see previous post). Paton and Joel are friends who decided to get together and flex they're collective artistic muscle on a weekly basis. They decided that they would do a weekly sketch topic and post up the results every Friday.
I think this is an awesome idea personally, But then Joel and Paton stepped it up a notch. They opted to dedicate they're first of they're weekly sketch challenges to the one and only mental organism....MODOK...and that is just.......AWESOME.

Paton Francis recently wrote this fine electronic letter to us here at the blog.

Love the march M.O.D.O.K. madness blog. I found the blog sometime last year and thought that I'd throw in a version. A buddy and I each did a version of M.O.D.O.K. Fun stuff.

Paton went on to tell us that he and his friend Joel Duggan got together to do a weekly sketch post every Friday. Awesomely enough they both decided that for the first weekly topic for sketches was going to be good ol' MODOK...
This is what I like to hear, good friends getting together, and getting involved in drawing some MODOK's.. The best of friendship, artistic exploration, and MINDBLASTS.

This sharply dressed rendition of MODOK comes from Peter Maher who titled it "SUNDAY's BEST MODOK".
I have to completely agree with that title.. There's really nothing better then MODOK dressing to the nines; I can imagine him gliding about town with stopwatch in hand and a pipe firmly set tween his teeth.. Handing out mindblast along the way.

This year however I stayed away from the green, the shamrocks, and booze to offer you a version of MODOK as a viking force that might have invaded Ireland and sacked some villages for beer and such.... NORSE MODOK or NORDOK if you prefer.. I guess just viking MODOK would be more correct... I really dunno...

In the long winter months when MODOK was cooped up in an AIM sub-basement due to inclement weather, he began playing Minecraft 18 hours online a day. A lot of people said it changed him, as he now refers to himself as a Mining Organism Designed Only for Krafting! This cubey Minecraft creation comes to us from Jared Sorensen who says:

MODOK got ahold of a popular computer game and hasn't been available for much in the way of killing.

I was wandering through a flower garden the other day and came across a swath of destruction. Much to my surprise, I spotted a ButterDOK floating around and brainblasting every flower he came across. Flora or fauna, it makes no difference in the killing game. This great drawing comes to March MODOK Madness by way of Brad Millette who writes:

"This piece was done for a weekly sketch feature with the topic of animal versions of superheroes and supervillains. I was given the choice "M.O.D.O.K. as a butterfly", and I think the rest speaks for itself."

"Frylock got a job at a nearby AIM facility to help pay the bills. Soon enough, Master Shake and Meatwad showed up at his AIM lab complaining about the TV not working, and started going through MODOK's stuff. Then they wreaked havoc on stuff, blew up Carl's house, and swam in his pool."

We recently received this post from Fake Larry over at Ghoulzone, a horror and humor themed website/podcast.
Larry writes:
"I just found your website and I'm a MODOK fan. I attached a picture of a MODOK I made in the Spore PC game. It's as close as I could make it using the creature parts in the game. Anyone who has Spore can search the Spore database for creatures and objects to import into their game, so if anyone wants to find my creation they can just search for MODOK, as far as I know it's the only one!"

Quite true Larry, much like the Highlander, "there can be only one Modok" the game of Spore.
